San Francisco, blue study
3/2012: Blue has many implications, “feeling blue”, “as a clear blue sky”, and so on.
It is seen as a cool colour, “Kind of Blue” was the seminal album from Miles Davis as a pinnacle, and yet was also to usher in a new form, of “cool jazz”. In Kandinsky’s paintings, it symbolises the beginning of his exploration of “the abstract” as a valid art form (the Blue Rider), laying the foundation of much of 20th Century painting. And of course there is Picasso’s blue period.
When I think of blue, I think of these things, and try to fathom its influence; singular, unique. Isn’t it the only colour to have a strong association with music? Blue has always been my favourite colour, and so it seems right to start exploring it; to see what it might come to mean in my work, what it will signify for me.
